It’s official! Spring has sprung. The flowers are blooming, the grass is growing, and the bees are buzzing. Unfortunately for allergy sufferers, all the things we love about the season are also the things that trigger symptoms.  If spring has you sniffling and sneezing, but you can’t find relief from traditional allergy medications, you’re going to love these natural home remedies for allergies!

Why use natural home remedies for allergies?

Why use home remedies for allergies when there are so many over-the-counter and prescription medications that provide relief? Well, for starters, some people just can’t tolerate allergy medications. For some, even non-drowsy medications can make them sleepy. Others can’t take it because it interacts with their regular medications or worsens certain medical conditions. For example, people with high blood pressure can’t take most decongestants.

Of course, there are also many people who just prefer to avoid medications and stick with natural remedies. Whatever your reason, you’ll be happy to know that there are plenty of easy home remedies to help relieve those allergy symptoms. Let’s check them out!

Home remedies that relieve allergy symptoms

As you read through these home remedies for allergies, please remember one thing: this is not medical advice. While most (if not all) of these remedies are safe if you’re typically a healthy person, even the most innocent remedies can be dangerous if you have certain medical conditions. If you are taking other medications, talk to your doctor before trying natural remedies.

Also, remember that, unless otherwise noted, these remedies are for adults. Some do work great for kids, and I’ll let you know which ones to try, but again, when in doubt, talk to your pediatrician. Now that we’ve got that cleared up, let’s get started.

home remedies for allergies

1. Good old-fashioned saline nasal rinse

The oldest remedies are often the best. After all, there’s a reason they’re still around, right? If you’re suffering from allergies, a nasal rinse should be the first thing you try to help you find relief. It’s also among the safest home remedies when used correctly. You can even use it on kids!

When it comes to saline rinses, you have two main options: a nasal irrigation device (like a neti pot) and plain old nasal spray. Nasal irrigation systems are neat because you can add essential oils to it (highly diluted, of course). Tea tree, peppermint, and/or rosemary are great because all three really help clear up your head. Peppermint is also fabulous for washing away brain fog.

If the idea of rinsing out your nasal passages with water freaks you out, though, you can also go the saline spray route. Sprays are also easier (and safer) to use on kids. Just make sure it’s plain saline solution and not loaded with decongestants, otherwise you’re back in the same boat as other OTC medications. Little Remedies is a good option for kids (and there’s no reason you can’t use it, too).

2. Nettle leaf capsules

Another option that’s safe for most healthy people, nettle leaf helps block histamines, much like Benedryl, but without all the side effects. However, this option isn’t good for those with low blood pressure or bleeding problems, as it acts as a blood thinner and tends to cause hypotension. If you have normal blood pressure, a slight drop isn’t a big deal. For those who run very low, though, it can cause problems.

It’s also hit or miss on whether it’s safe for kids. While most healthy children can tolerate it, some can’t. This is one case where you definitely want to talk to your pediatrician first.

3. Probiotics

What does a supplement designed to aid your digestive system have to do with relieving your allergies? A lot, as it turns out. A study found that probiotic use helped relieve allergy symptoms in both kids and adults. More research is underway to find out the exact strain that’s most beneficial, but for now a well-rounded probiotic supplement may help.

You can also find naturally occurring probiotics in certain foods, like yogurt, kefir, and (surprisingly) pickles. Of the three, yogurt is probably the easiest to get your kids to eat.

4. Honey from a local source

One of the tastiest home remedies for allergies, local honey helps you build up a tolerance to allergens in your area. It MUST be locally produced from local bees, though, not the stuff that comes in the little bear at your supermarket. Your best bet for finding good local honey is through either a farmer’s market or a nursery (the plant kind, of course).

Honey is safe for most people, including kids over age 1 (if your curious why, this article explains it pretty well). If possible, stick to “raw” honey because the heating process used for “regular” honey does strip away some of the bee pollen (and with it, the benefits).

5. Essential oils

We touched on essential oils a bit when we talked about the neti pot, but let’s get a little more in depth. Not everyone is comfortable using them IN their noses, after all. The best essential oils for relieving allergy symptoms are probably what you’d expect: peppermint, eucalyptus, tea tree, rosemary, and other oils that you associate with relieving clogged sinuses. Lemon is another good one that helps support a healthy respiratory system.

As far as using these essential oils goes, start with the simplest (and safest) route first- add them to a diffuser.  Try combining peppermint, eucalyptus, and maybe a little lavender (to cut down on the medicinal scent) into your diffuser and placing it near where you’re working or relaxing.

If that doesn’t do the trick roll-ons are another great option. Mix your allergy-relieving oils into a carrier oil, like sweet almond oil, and put it all into a roller-ball bottle. Rub a bit on your pulse points for relief. You can also rub it onto your chest, much like you would with a vapor rub. For tips on making a roll-on, follow the directions in this sleepy time roll-on tutorial, but just swap out the essential oils.

Depending on the severity of your allergies, you may need to combine a couple of these home remedies to find maximum relief. If you’re looking for a natural remedy to allergies that’s as easy to use as OTC medicines, you can also try one of the many natural supplements for allergy support on the market. Rootology’s Breathe Free is a great option because it works pretty fast (a lot of natural supplements for allergies need to build up in your system before they provide relief). Again, talk to your doctor first, especially since these supplements combine multiple herbs.
